Trail Ridge Road

This morning, we got up and got ready to head up Trail Ridge Road. We got things packed up to keep Witten entertained, got coats for the top of the pass, and made some sack lunches.

We stopped to get a picture of the view from our living room. Coincidentally, it was also the same view from our bedroom window. We had to get a picture of Witten and his GranJan too. When we got into the park, we were informed that the road was closed a third of the way up until Memorial Day, so we decided to go ahead and drive up to the top of where we could. We parked in the large parking lot at the top of the area that we could get through, then walked down the sidewalk to the scenic overlook. (The small lot there was only big enough for four cars, and it was full at the moment.) When we took the sidewalk back down to the overlook, we didn't realize that most of it was iced over, so for a good portion of the walk, we had to walk on a narrow strip of dry sidewalk up against the rails that was only about 6" wide. At this wider part, we stopped to look out at the mountains. This was the BEAUTIFUL view from the overlook. We obviously had to get a family picture in front of that. (My sweatshirt isn't doing a great job of hiding my ever growing baby bump.)The wind was EXTREMELY strong. It would be fairly calm, and then all of a sudden, we would have strong gusts that lasted a few seconds to a minute. You can tell by Witten's face that these were not fun to sit through. In fact, at one point, the wind threw him off of this little bench onto the rocks. As cute as that face is, I had to get a shot where he wasn't making a silly face too.Mitch and I decided to climb to the top of this rocky area. It was a little precarious because there was icy on some of the spots that would have otherwise been great footholds. It was fun to climb up though. I wasn't sure that I would make it up there because of my current state, but it wasn't too hard. The harder part (which still wasn't too bad) was getting down because you had to stretch beyond the icy parts, and my little T-rex legs don't stretch that far.I got a little frustrated because we had patiently waited for others to come down off the rock so that they could have some time up there alone. As soon as Mitch and I got to the top, and car full of teenagers ran up there, so we promptly headed down. When we got to the bottom, we were informed that Witten was very unhappy that we had not let him climb up the rock with us. Mitch decided to take him a little of the way up. He wanted to climb it himself though, and when Mitch started bringing him back down, he threw a bit of a fit.Later in the evening, Mitch and I went out to dinner while GranJan and Witten ate leftover soft tacos from the night before. It was nice to get out just the two of us. This was kind of our 5 anniversary trip combined with our "Only Opportunity to get out of Town Before Reese Comes" trip. My mom was great about helping out.
